How the Whale Swims Work
Your whale swimming day begins with a boat excursion into the waters around Vava'u, accompanied by an experienced local skipper and whale swim guide. As you search for humpbacks, you may see blows, tail flukes, breaches or mothers travelling with their calves.
When whales are located, your guide assesses their behaviour and the sea conditions to determine whether an in-water encounter is appropriate. If conditions allow, a small group enters the water with masks, snorkels and fins, following the guide's instructions and maintaining a respectful distance.
Tonga whale swimming - practical information
Whale Swimming Season: July to October, with August and September generally popular months.
Group Size: Up to four guests in the water with a guide, subject to local regulations and operator procedures.
Responsible Encounters: Licensed operators follow rules designed to minimise disturbance, including restrictions on approaching, pursuing or interfering with whales and their calves.
Recommended Stay: Seven nights, allowing several opportunities to join whale swimming excursions.
Swimming Ability: Participants should be comfortable swimming and snorkelling in open water. Conditions can vary, and a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
