1. Fiji has two of the largest reef systems in the Southern Hemisphere - the Great Astrolabe Reef in Kadavu and the Great Sea Reef in Vanua Levu. This means the coral scape offers incredible diversity - we are blessed with cave systems, swim throughs, hard and soft coral gardens, arches and drop offs. There are also shark feeds and wrecks that offer fantastic photographic opportunities for large apex predator images and wide angle ambient light only shots.
2. Fiji diving offers some of the best soft coral dive sites in the world that attract scuba divers from all around the world. Grand Central Station at Namena Reserve (dived from Savusavu) is world class with hammerheads, grey reef sharks, tuna, dolphins, schooling barracuda, trevally and huge coral stacks teeming with fish and soft corals. The Great White Wall is the pinnacle dive site on Rainbow Reef with divers descending into a volcanic lava tube filled with red soldierfish and filled with soft coral bushes prior to emerging on to a white Dendronepthya covered wall, glowing lilac in the blue ocean, that descends to 100 metres deep covered in reef fish. Elsewhere Vatu - I - Ra marine park, dived from the north tip of Viti Levu, contains the fabulous incredibly photogenic dive sites of Mellow Yellow, Black Magic, Mount Mutiny and Instant Replay - all of which are soft coral covered stacks, buzzing with fish life in a technicolour scene in clear waters.
3. Fiji diving is fantastic all year round. Water temperatures in winter (between May to November) are between 25-28 degrees and in summer 28-32 degrees. The clearer waters (best for wide angle photography) can be enjoyed in winter however, in the summer months the winds ease meaning the seas are less choppy.
4. Fiji has an incredible array of marine biodiversity from the largest pelagics to the tiniest of critters on the sea bed. In winter humpback whales and manta rays are present whereas dolphins and pilot whales can be spotted all year round. Reef systems teem with brightly coloured tropical fish, turtles, barracuda schools, fusiliers and sharks. Take the time to zoom in on any small patch of coral and macro life will delight the careful observer.
5. Fiji has several pro-photographer dive shops on premium reef areas who are fully equipped to assist the photographer. Camera rooms with chargers and air blowers are commonplace. Camera buckets on dive boats and dive staff who are able to carry and help your camera rig safely into the water and to collect it from you in rough seas and strong currents are accessible. For macro lovers it is also possible to find Fiji dive guides who are able to assist with snoot positioning.
