It is absolutely critical in our opinion, to choose a dive resort who times the currents correctly . The quality of the diving on Rainbow reef is very particular to these nutrient currents.
Volivoli beach resort is a great choice if you want to experience the best of diving in Fiji. The resort is very popular with experienced divers, groups and photographers. The Vatu i Ra park is 40 minutes away, there are local dive sites for windier days and the resort is a convenient 3 hour drive from the airport.
Volivoli has a huge number of dive sites at its disposal and normally you'll be alone on the reef in your dive group. The Vatu-I-Ra marine park has a range of pinnacles and small reef systems teeming with fish life and covered in every type of soft coral. Pristine hard corals and clownfish provide safety stops so fabulous you want them to go on forever. The best diving is dependent on the sea state but whenever possible the dive boat captains will head out for the 'wow' of the marine reserve.
The diving is generally easy and relatively shallow. Most of the dives are around 25 metres at their deepest point. Currents can be hard work but of course are totally necessary for Fiji's signature soft corals. Perfect your buoyancy before diving at Volivoli as there are a range of fabulous swim throughs and nooks and crannies to enjoy. The dive boats are well equipped and speedy as the sites are quite long distance.

The Fijian 'meke' (pronounced 'meh-keh; is a traditional cultural dance with the men as the 'mantana' (dancers) and the women as the 'vakatara' (singers). The men perform warrior style movements and the dance is often accompanied by fire, body paint, weaponry and face pulling!
VoliVoli Beach Resort package includes a lovo (with meat, fish and vegetables slow cooked in the ground under banana leaves) , and a meke performance.

The visual splendour of this world class dive is incredible. A labyrinth of coral formations has been covered by a technicolour forest of soft corals teeming with reef fish.
A contender for one of the best dives in the world.
Descend into a grotto of soft corals, vibrant red seawhips, gorgonians. Swimthroughs and overhangs provide current funnels and homes of fish life. Around 20 metres in depth. Good buoyancy is important in the swimthroughs .
A lone pinnacle dropping down to a maximum depth of 25 metres covered in black coral, resident yellow damselfish, gorgonians and soft corals of every description. Turtles are common and schools of lyretails, fusilier fizz around you.
Absolutely pristine hard corals of every descriptionn covered in fish schools and anemones greet the diver. Descend to around 25 metres before circling this solitary sea mount slowly. Black coral bushes, soft corals, Tubastria (black sun coral) and gorgonians fight for space on this gorgeous dive site. Larger fish are more common with emperors, bass and trevally skulking around the reef fish.
Golden Dreams is filled with orange and yellow soft corals, clownfish and offers lots of swim throughs. Another photographer's delight with the light of this shallow dive site resplendent.
A beautiful site in Vatu-I-Ra marine park. Several bommies decorated in Fiji's signature soft corals; swaying Sinularia, mushroom corals, sea whip, gorgonian fans, dendronepthya and much more. On the edge of the drop off there is a good chance of reef sharks, spanish mackerel, tuna and other pelagics.
Lots of swimthroughs, ledges and overhangs filled with sea whips and soft corals. Nudibranchs, lionfish, sharks and schools of fusilers.
A series of pinnacles with swimthroughs allowing sunlight to stream through creating a mysterious other wordly effect. Beautiful hard corals and mushroom corals on the 5 metre shelf covered with Anthias and other small reef fish.
These tiny shrimp live on the underside of the large blue starfish common on Fiji's shallow seabed. The commensal shrimp, which are able to mimic the colour and texture of their host starfish, will tend to wounds and parasites in exchange for protection from the starfish.
This shrimp lives in colonies amid the branches of gorgonians, soft corals and hydroids. They are transparent and reflect the colours of their surroundings
Miniscule nudibranchs, growing to a mere 0.5 cm, live on Halimeda seaweed. They are able to eat the chloroplasts of the weed and use them to photosynthesise when foods is short.
These slothful creatures live in shallow sea grass before the start of the reef. Upright swimmers, using pectoral fin steerage and a prehensile tail to anchor themselves to grass.
Commensal to colonies of bubble coral these little shrimps normally inhabit the host coral in pairs with a large female and smaller male.
Tube anemones are popular habitats for peacock tail shrimps who can hide in the stinging tentacles of the anemone when alarmed.
Sexy shrimp get their name due to the seductive way they flick their tail up and down. They grow to 2 cm and live in colonies in shallow areas around anemones.
Fang blennies are not popular on the reef, they nip at unsuspecting fish and then retreat backwards into opportune hidey holes such as this discarded Fiji gold bottle.
